THE LASTINGHAM STONES

a very rough and preliminary guide

1.  Probably from a Roman altar, and re-used as a vesicular window in the stone church mentioned by Bede

2.  Catalogues often label these as being the door jambs of the Saxon monastery. This may not be correct.

3.  Saxon cross head, late 8th to early 9th century. Found 1838 near east buttress of porch. The complete cross would have stood over 20 feet high, and may well have been the main standing cross in the monastic enclosure.

4.  8th century dragon's head, which formed part of the decorated head of the Abbot's throne (now on loan to the Yorkshire Museum, York. The earliest of the Lastingham stones

5. A late 8th or early 9th century Anglian crosshead

6. An early 9th century crosshead

7. Both sides of a 10th century cross shaft with an interwoven pattern, but also with the key design typical of late Saxon crosses. This suggest that the monastery did not remain deserted, but survived the Danish (Viking) conquest.

8.  An 11th century cross shaft

9. A hogsback tombstone.
