Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed for his followers, 'That they may be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you.' (John 17).

"The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation."     (From the Church of England's Declaration of Assent, Canon C5).

________________

The Archbishop of Canterbury and many others have  pointed out that it is chiefly the energy that is put in at a local level that will help churches come together.

Here are some examples of things that are happening in our group of churches.

  • Groups from Ampleforth Abbey celebrate Mass in Lastingham Crypt.

  • Around St Chad's day (2 March) Lastingham Church hosted a service of music and readings, prayer and witness, compiled by the Roman Catholic Church of St Chad in Kirkbymoorside. (St Chad was Lastingham’s second abbot. Read about the death of St Chad.)  This service has been led by the choir of St Chad’s together with the Lastingham Benefice Choir.

  • At Hartoft, in the parish of Rosedale, an Anglican Eucharist is held each month in the Methodist Chapel (or in a private house in colder weather).

  • For many years there has been an ecumenical Lent Study Group in the village of Lastingham.
