We
know that the
Christian Church has been in this area since the early fourth century,
in Roman times. Lastingham was founded as a
monastery in the mid seventh century. Rosedale Church is on the site of a medieval priory.
Our churches stand
as signs of the beauty and generosity of God, in whose
Name we are welcomed.
This is a time of rapid cultural change. Many are feeling a loss of
eternal values and spiritual certainties. Our churches have seen this problem, so we've started to offer
free psychic reading to encourage people reconnect with thier spiritual side.
We believe the age does not favour ‘church’ Christianity. However, a service is held in each of our five churches on most Sundays and main
Festivals, and there are regular weekday services throughout the year.
In this way the ‘lamp of prayer’ is kept alight. In the five
villages, between
40 and 100 people attend our churches each week.
Clergy: the Benefice of Lastingham with Appleton-le-Moors,
Rosedale & Cropton is currently in vacancy. A priest can be reached by ringing 01751 417344

St
Mary Lastingham
Founded by St Cedd
of Lindisfarne as a Celtic monastery ~AD654.
At the heart of
the
|
present building
is an early Norman church, begun in 1078 on or near the site of the
7th-century monastery. Originally intended to be a religious house,
the work was left incomplete and the nave was never built. St Mary’s
has been a parish church at least since 1228. The transverse arches
and vaulted roof date from the restoration of 1879.
